I believe the obvious question everyone is asking.... "Why in the world can't that e-vat be removed?"
C'mon lets be honest with ourselves, will it really help a lot more people if it stays there, rather than be lifted away from the prices of oil... which in turn if it was ever to be lifted, would definitely save us from the soaring prices of basic commodities, transportation, services, and everything else under the Philippines sun!!!
They say e-vat is for the benefit of the masses "pang masang pilipino". But the question is who are the masses? Is it not true that the population of this so called "masses" is comprised of people who buy rice grains, ride jeepney, buy shampoo, or toothpaste sachets from their nearest sari-sari store? Exactly the same people who are now suffering from the price hikes of all these things because oil price is continously rising and e-vat deepens the pain even more.
The reality is, e-vat has failed to protect the interest of the many. It may have only served the interest of a few number of politicians, and our country needs to re-assess these matters. In my point of view defending e-vat by threatening the people that by removing it, the gov't. will no longer be able to support projects for the masses, is very similar to meralco trying to defend systems loss with the analogy of an ice melting... both are flawed concepts trying to justify a mistake simply to earn more profit.

Oil Price hike and Transport groups
It has become clear that oil prices in this country will continue to rise week after week after week, need I really say more? One solution that everyone is waiting and hoping for is lifting that additional VAT in oil prices. Honestly it will help, but as they say all it can really do is delay the inevitable. Well at least a lot of us will still be able to smile a couple of months more if they can just remove that vat. Transport groups are also clamoring for a price increase and declaring a transport holiday. It kind makes matters worse for the common Filipino who now pays for higher price rice, commodities, and now their daily jeepney fares.
Some people think that I maybe a bit extreme, but do try to see through what I would like to explain for a couple of minutes. Do transport groups really deserve a fair hike? What is really the cause of them losing income? I believe that this transport group should be given the chance to maximize their income not just by lowering the prices of oil or increasing their fares but by lowering the number of jeepneys, buses, tricycles etc.
See I told you I would be a bit extreme. But, if you do ride jeepneys it would occur to you that often times 1 jeepney will only carry 5 passengers, not even half of what they can really carry. Or in another situation you will see about 5-10 jeepneys forming a line at a corner of a street waiting there for hours just to be filled with passengers. My point is we have an alarming excess of transport vehicles. This fact alone causes a lot of problems such as congestion of traffic, air pollution, excessive consumption of oil of course, and my all time favorite, excessive number of undisciplined, reckless drivers on the street!
There should be a law controlling the number of how many transport vehicles should there be to accommodate the number of people in that particular city. And to put it to an even higher level, there should be jeepney stops, or even a set of particular time when jeepneys can stop at a certain place to collect their passengers. By reducing the amount of transport vehicles in Metro Manila alone, we will greatly reduce gasoline consumption. The few selected vehicles that will be able to comply with the standards set by this law will now be able to maximize their income because there wouldn’t be a lot of jeepneys lying around with only a couple of passengers in them.
Let’s just face the truth; back in the old days being in the transportation business is indeed profitable. The government should now have a higher set of qualifications or rules to select on how anyone can be part of the transport group. This way maybe, just maybe we will finally see disciplined drivers in Manila.

The root of all corruption
What am I talking about? Corruption in the government, in different businesses, in hospitals, and even in your own little comfortable office!
The thing is, corruption has been here for quite some time now, and I believe that no matter how intellectual you are, or how righteous you want to try to be. Sooner or later only two possible outcomes can occur when you are submerged into an institution drowning in corruption. First, you either get kicked out by your own team, or the people in that group because you cannot conform to their so called “standard of work”… or 2nd, you yourself continue the tradition of corruption to be passed on to your subordinates and later generations.
Unfortunately no one really breaks free. And as time goes by, as the country is maturing through this new millennium, we become aware of how corrupt officials can be. How much money do politicians actually steal from the people that voted for them? How many doctors are there, that prescribe certain medicines because certain companies give them certain commissions? Or how many bosses will favor a certain supplier just because there’s something in it for them, although it will definitely cost their companies reputation and standards?
Is there really a way to cure this new cancer of the Philippines?
I honestly don’t know. But I have hopes, and somehow I still believe we can. Talking about it is a start, making a lot people aware that this is indeed happening. Maybe if we talk about it long and loud enough, people will stop ignoring it. As the saying goes… “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is to do absolutely nothing”. I think we’ve done nothing long enough! We’ve kept our mouth shut; we’ve focused only on ourselves, enjoying that Starbucks frappe, listening to Ipod tunes, hitting on Friendsters’ webpage almost all day without even pausing for a second to ask the question “hey what have I done for mankind today?” Do me a favor and ask yourself just that. What legacy do you want to be part of? What can you do to honestly change our country, or the world for that matter?
There is hope, not everyone will necessarily agree with me on this opinion but I think we can change. I honestly believe a lot of corruption can be stopped from its very root. And that root is the simple concept of giving and accepting “tips”, the act of giving and accepting money in exchange for an extra service whether legal or illegal.
It’s quite obvious why it is wrong to give or accept tips illegally, but the question is why we shouldn’t be doing it even in legal ways. Well let me ask you something, is it right to pay for a service a 2nd time knowing that you have already paid for it? I’ve worked in a hospital as a therapist, and I have had my share of tips. What happens is when two or more of my patients come in at the same time, I pay more attention to the patient giving me tips, because I know I have to take care of that patient more, or give that person a special treatment. But I realized it’s unfair to other patients, they all pay their treatment dues but I treat them unequally due to tips. This is just one simple example, but look at what happens in government offices, some workers don’t even do their job, or makes excuses to not do their job well, simply because they are waiting for tips, or rather even asking for it. We all know this to be true thus we coined the term “padulas” (giving an extra amount of money so that your papers or documents will finally be processed!)
I believe that if we could just stop patronizing the act of giving and receiving tips, real work can finally be done in different offices. Real services can be provided. That a lot of people will actually start caring how well they did their job, and not just how much money they can try to get from other people.
I know I want to say so many other things. In the end it is my hope that this government will make the act of giving and receiving tips “illegal”! I believe it’s about time that we should stop this concept, because it is the very concept that corrupts as all. I ask this country to create a law that will punish those who continue with this act. But most of all, I ask you the reader to keep an open mind, to look at the good things that can happen if we stop this act, and to spread the word.

Much ado about Skin whitening
A lot of people are trying to find answers to skin whitening on different blogs and websites. Searching for good advice, advertisements, or any sort of promise that will at least keep their hopes up. Every now and then, they'll stumble upon certain answers like.... "why change your complexion?", "Just love your own skin" or even "are you crazy... trying to be like Michael Jackson?". I say, we just let them be and let them follow what they want.
The thing about beauty, is that it is not defined by one culture but of many. Such that, in the western world people who have a good tanned skin are recognize as healthy, and beautiful. However in the east, white, pale skin is a thing of desire.
I think it's about complementing and accentuating physical features. In general caucasian features are complemented with a tanned skin, that it gives them a vibrant glow of life. Asian features on the other hand, becomes accentauted with a whiter skin, and this in turn is perceived as a "healthy glow".
To sum it up. If sum people wants to get a tan, and no one would care to judge them about it, then why should we judge people who wants to whiten their skin? All of us needs to feel accepted, and some to be even recognize. Different cultures have set a certain standard on how they define beauty, and there is absolutely nothing wrong wanting to become beautiful as we perceive it to be.
